THE UNDENIABLE EFFECT COVID-19 HAD ON COLD CHAIN TRENDS

By user
When some of the busiest cities in the world saw bare freezers as they went about their shopping, it came about as nothing short of a shock to most people. This was the first sign of the Covid-19 global pandemic that was sweeping the world. While the outbreak is winding down in most countries and things are returning to normal – or what is now known as “the new normal” – the changes that affected the industry are likely to stay. There was immense pressure on the industry to bounce back quickly from the initial shock of the pandemic, highlighting the importance of both perishable and pharmaceutical products. Quick adaptation was key. The speed at which companies pivoted and strategies adopted during the pandemic are why essential pharmaceutical and perishable items are still available to the world today – despite the challenges and disruptions. These experiences have undeniably altered how we view cold chain solutions. This article details just some of these changes.

1. Demand for warehouse capacity

The delays in the transportation of pharmaceutical related products due to the pandemic contributed to an already glaring issue in the industry. Stricter regulations, port congestions and increasing fuel cost had all contributed to supply chain challenges. With companies relooking their strategies, Temperature Controlled storage space, in particular, is projected to be a hotbed for investment over the next few years.

2. The role of technology has become more prominent

We saw how Covid-19 presented the world with a challenge in the form of the global pandemic. The emphasis on the role of technology and innovation in the industry will be key to enabling real time logistics tracking and monitoring. With the unavoidable lengthening of transit periods due to the challenges posed by the pandemic, controlled-atmosphere technology will become more prominent. Because of this, we have seen various packaging companies innovating and launching new products with better temperature control capabilities and for longer durations. We can now expect much more incorporation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into processes which is guaranteed to expedite the process even further.

3. Improved reliability on labour and planning

Before the vaccine was made widely available, supply chain networks were constantly interrupted. There was a deficit in labour resulting in delays and the production of items being compromised. Companies had to reconvene and improve their strategies and plans to overcome the shortage of labour, integrating more contingency and redundancy alternatives. There was also an increased demand for incremental outsourcing. As such, the industry had to find its way around these challenges, especially considering the constraints inherent to transporating cold chain items such as lack of time and space. Ultimately, this more comprehensive planning helped enhance the options made available. With all the innovation and brand new strategies being considered more carefully, there is sure to be improvements made from the lessons learned during more trying times.

Conclusion

With the situation regarding Covid-19 seemingly growing less urgent and the restrictions being relaxed in most parts of the world, it would be easy to grow complacent. Fortunately, the industry has quickly adapted to an ever-evolving world and new situations. Successful temperature-controlled logistics will always be essential in ensuring on-time delivery of temperature-controlled items.
